Cloaking Your Affiliate Links is Easy

Cloaking Your Affiliate LinksIf you are into affiliate marketing, one of the most effective methods is to cloak your affiliate links. You get away from links that are very complicated, and simplify what your reader sees. It also makes it a bit more difficult for his to go around you and purchase the product directly from the original seller.

There are lots of ways to cloak links. I purchased a plugin some years ago that would cloak my affiliate links and place the kinks in post where an assigned keyword came up. The problem was that in some cases it rearranged the text of the post itself. It was called The Stealth Profit Machine. Not only did it mess up my posts in ways that were subtle enopugh that it took an entire afternoon one time to find out what was doing it, but the links were sometimes unreliable as well. Obviously not the way to go.

You can always cloak links at the domain level. Go into your domain control panel at your domain registrar and set your domain forwarding to the link you want to redirect. This is complicated and difficult to keep updated.

Then you can redirect links in your hosting cPanel. Sometimes this is necessary if you want to redirect your main domain, but again it’s cumbersome and difficult to keep updated years later when your needs change. If you are making a bit of money from a website, but you’re not getting rich from it, you need to be able to come back to it years later and know where your links go to.

That’s why I have used Pretty link. It’s a free plugin for WordPress that is reliable and easy to use. I’ve got all my cloaked links on a site in one place where they are easy to see and change later as you find it necessary. In this site, I’m using a different link redirection plugin called clink. I’m using it because it is recommended by someone I know to be very trustworthy, and I thought I should try it. I cannot in good conscience recommend it as yet because I have not tested it thoroughly enough, but keep an eye on what I’m doing here, and I will report on it in a few months when I’ve tested it over time.

To install the plugin, just go to your blog dashboard. On the left side menu, click plugins, the add new. In the resulting page, put pretty link in the search box. When the results come up, install and activate it. After it’s activated you will see pretty link in the left menu, roll your mouse over that, then click add new link. The target URL is the link you want to post to. Copy and paste it using the menu or ctrl-c for copy and ctrl-v for paste.  When you select the link be sure you don’t get any spaces. Type in the last part of the link you want to use. ex. rusty would be what you would type for rustycampbell.com/rusty.
